Over a few days, you'll be able to embrace this feeling of being at one with nature and just enjoy yourself!
Enjoy a car-free weekend
Decize, Nevers, La Charité-sur-Loire and Pouilly-sur-Loire... the stopover towns along the Loire in Pays Nivernais are all connected by a railroad track.
By train or by bike, in one direction or the other, in small parts or the entire section from end to end... you decide how you are going to experience the Eurovélo6® and go at your own pace!
DAY 1
Decize-Nevers / 35 km - 2hrs30
Decize
Take the time to visit the town centre of Decize. This small town is where the Nivernais canal, the Loire side canal, the Loire and Aron rivers all meet, and it is a very pleasant place to explore. The surprising narrow streets, bridges, ramparts, Port de la Jonction and colourful little houses (available to rent) are all most definitely worth the detour.
Exploring the town of DecizeFleury-sur-Loire
Come and follow the towpath alongside the Loire side canal, through a calm, rustic environment. Stop off in Fleury to recharge your batteries (not that you particularly need to rest your legs after this leisurely ride!) and have lunch before then carrying on to Nevers.
In this riverside town, there are two options on the water's edge: place an order at La Guinguette or have a picnic on the tables available.
A riverside stop in Fleury-sur-LoireRiding through nature!
As you head towards Nevers, don't hesitate to treat yourselves to some feel-good detours, via the Chemin des Ecoliers to the Bac d'Allier for example, an incredible natural place classified as a WWF site and a perfect Instagram photo opportunity!
Where to sleep and where to eat in Nevers?
You've arrived in Nevers! It's time to get yourselves comfortable.
Discover our selection of accommodation with the 'Accueil Vélo' label, as they can offer you services adapted to cyclists and a safe place to store your bike. Here are some recommendations for bistros and restaurants where you can come and taste our delicious local specialities, without any fuss!
DAY 2
Nevers-La Charité / 43 km - 4 hrs
Nevers
This morning, make sure you leave some time to explore the town. It's not very big but it's worth a visit. On foot or in a tuk-tuk set off to explore the town centre, with the river Loire flowing nearby.
You'll enjoy admiring the Palace of the Dukes of Nevers, considered as the first Château of the Loire, the pottery studios, and the cathedral of Saint-Cyr and Saint-Julitte with the magnificent stained-glass windows.
Towards La Charité-sur-Loire
With a full belly, it's time to embark upon the longest step of this adventure, but don't panic, the route is almost completely flat so you will barely need to think about it. Just remember to keep pedalling and breathe as you ride past the beautiful scenery along greenway routes for the majority of this section. There are no cars to be seen, the route is all yours!
The arrival in La Charité-sur-Loire is amazing, over an old stone bridge!
Get comfortable for the evening. Again, you can choose to stay at accommodation with the 'Accueil Vélo' label and enjoy the adapted services for you and your bike.
Sleep and eat in La Charité-sur-Loire
DAY 3
La Charité-Pouilly / 16 km - 1 hr
La Charité-sur-Loire
Just like every other morning of this trip, you'll be visiting the town!
This town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a major stopover on the Camino de Santiago, known as the 'Cité du Mot' (city of words) and it boasts a beautiful town centre just begging to be explored, with traditional shops devoted to books and any related professions, cobbled streets, ramparts with breathtaking views, the church of Notre Dame which is a classified monument thanks to Prosper Mérimée, the 'Maison du Nain' (tiny house), the Cistercian priory church, etc.
Head to Pouilly-sur-Loire
There is so much to see on this last section. First of all, you'll be crossing the whole of the Natural Reserve of the Loire Valley which is home to a fascinating range of flora and fauna. Stop off to venture along one of the footpaths or to enjoy one of the many events there.
Pouilly-sur-Loire
In Pouilly-sur-Loire, stop by the Tour du Pouilly-Fumé, a visitor's centre devoted to this famous wine, with a brand-new shop so you can buy a bottle or two to take home.
Then, if you feel like it, you can choose to carry on to Saint-Andelain, slightly north of the small town, where you'll have an incredible 360° view of the vineyard from the lookout point.
