GR® de Pays Tour of Morvan roadmap
The ultimate way to explore the Morvan on foot
The GR® de Pays Tour of Morvan is a hiking loop trail around the Morvan Regional Nature Park and crosses through the 4 departments of Burgundy. Over more than 232 km, follow the yellow and red marked route and breathe in the fresh air of the Morvan! Even if you'll be walking over low mountain territory, you'll still need some training under your belt for the whole route. All hikers can choose to walk several sections or alternative routes on a 2 to 10 day adventure.
Along the way, you can expect:
- to walk across rolling meadows, lulled by the gentle sound of the flowing streams and rivers,
- to be amazed by the six great lakes of the Morvan.
- You'll need to save some energy for the climb up Mont Beuvray and Haut-Folin.
- Along the route, you'll pass by treasures of architectural and historic heritage. An itinerary with plenty of surprises up its sleeve!
An invigorating adventure in the midst of nature
You'll pass through some surprising places along the route. Take the time to stop and embrace the calming scenery before you.
A land of lakes
The Morvan is renowned for its six great lakes:
- Chamboux: this artificial lake created in 1984 supplies many towns with water and is a popular fishing spot.
- Chaumeçon: departure point for activities (rafting, canoeing, rowing), the dam here retains 12 million cubic metres of water and the body of water is 36 metres high!
- Le Crescent: this reservoir is difficult to access and so remains unspoilt. It produces energy for a hydroelectric plant and helps regulate the flow of the river Seine.
- Pannecière: this is the biggest and most recent of Morvan's artificial lakes and it is mainly used for fishing and for observing the local fauna and flora.
- Saint-Agnan: the wild environment of meadows and vast forests around this lake resembles the scenery of Ireland.
- Les Settons: a popular place for swimming and water sports in summer, and a peaceful place to enjoy the rest of the year.
The peaks
After a bit of effort, you'll reach the 2 iconic peaks of the Morvan and you can admire the exceptional panoramic views from the top:
- Mont Beuvray: at the peak at an elevation of 821 metres, you'll have an exceptional view of Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire.
- Haut Folin: the highest peak of the Morvan at an elevation of 901 metres. The mountainsides are perfect for hiking in the summer and then turn into the ideal ski slopes in winter.
Heritage galore
Thanks to the countless architectural treasures and historic sites and museums such as the Musée de la Résistance, the GR® de Pays Tour of Morvan is also a choice destination for fans of beautiful historic sites and fascinating venues.
As well as providing all the information you could possibly need about the region, the Morvan Nature Park Visitor's Centre (Maison du Parc Naturel du Morvan) also organises a whole host of activities: discovery trails, the herbularium, arboretum and also the Musée de la Résistance en Morvan in Saint-Brisson and the Maison des Hommes et des Paysages ecomuseum in Morvan. We recommend stopping by these places to kick off your adventure in the Morvan!
A closer look at... Bibracte
The GR® de Pays Tour of Morvan will lead you up to the peak of Mont Beuvray where you'll come across the oppidum of Bibracte, the very place where Vercingetorix was proclaimed leader of the Gauls in the year 52 BC.
Surprising châteaus and ecomuseums
If you would like to see some châteaus, you can choose between:
- the Château de Bazoches, a feudal castle built in the 12th century and acquired and renovated by Vauban from 1675.
- the Château de Ménessaire: a 13th-century château, rebuilt in the 17th century in the Italian Renaissance style.
To really find out everything there is to know about the Morvan, we recommend visiting the various ecomuseums: the Musée Vauban in Saint-Léger-Vauban, the Maison du Seigle in Ménessaire, or the Maison des Galvachers in Anost.
All that's left is to make your choice!
