A 13th-century fortified manor, the Château de Germolles became the favourite residence, in the 14th-century, of Marguerite of Flanders and Philip the Bold, the first Duke of Burgundy during the Valois dynasty. Apart from the 13th-century entrance towers, chapel and cellar, the main building's 14th-century three-storied Gothic architecture are definitely worth seeing, as are the murals painted by Jean de Beaumetz, Claus Sluter sculptures, the private chapel for the Ducal couple and a collection of decorated paving tiles that had been previously laid on the manor's floor. The castle grounds were planted according to the romantic 19th-century English style.
