Day 1

A visit of Chalon-sur-Saône

Come and explore Chalon-sur-Saône, the town of Niépce, the inventer of photography. Wander along the banks of the Saône and the narrow streets of the town centre, on a guided tour or along the "Chemin de l'Orbandale". You'll see half-timbered houses and other sights on the way, including:

  • the unmissable Place Saint-Vincent,
  • the cathedral and its magnificent cloister,
  • Saint Lawrence Island,
  • the Tour du Beffroi…

Venture inside the Musée Nicéphore Niépce. Come and see a unique photography collection and some great temporary exhibitions!

If you are a fan of the water, Chalon Balade sur Saône awaits you to explore Chalon-sur-Saône in a different way, with a tour guide. 2 hours on the waters of the Saône and the Canal du Centre. The view of the town from the river is definitely worth it!

Domaine de Chamirey

Come and enjoy a walking tour with tastings of the estate's "Premier Cru" vines. A great way to learn about the "terroir" and wine-making expertise of this exceptional estate.

Enjoy lunch at the "table d'hôtes" with a breath-taking view of the vineyard. Why not stay a while longer, at the charming bed & breakfast.

Through the vineyards

For about a hundred kilometres from Chalon-sur-Saône, explore the winding roads that lead on from the Burgundy Wine Route.

Venture inside the winemaking estates and learn about the well-known appellations: Mercurey, Rully, Givry, Montagny, Bouzeron, Maranges, Côtes du Couchois…

Time for a tasting

At the Givry Vins Wine-Tasting Cellar, visitors can taste more than 30 wines at the tasting area with Enomatic system, all of which are then available to buy, at producer's prices.

There is another wine-tasting cellar in Mercurey, the Divin Wine-Tasting Cellar, in a unique place with 64 wines from the appellation to taste.

Cycling along the Greenways and the Voie Bleue

Are you looking for an experience in the great outdoors, then set off on a bike ride from Chalon-sur-Saône! Some major cycle routes cross through here, so you have a wide range of rural getaways to choose from. Towpaths along the Canal du Centre, the Saône, a getaway through the countryside along the Voie Bressane, or the iconic "Grande Boucle de Bourgogne du Sud" (big loop through southern Burgundy)… You can expect some great adventures and sightseeing!

Not-to-be-missed in the summer

Chalon dans la Rue

For the past 30 years, this has been THE unmissable event of the summer! Mid-July, a festive and artistic atmosphere takes over the public spaces in the town. More than 150 French and international groups take to the streets, squares and parks. Chalon-sur-Saône is brought to life by this multi-faceted festival: street theatre, circus, dancing, parades, puppets, music, visual art, much to the delight of everyone who comes to watch!
