Day 1

A tour to follow at your own pace

You'll enjoy strolling along the flowery quayside of this charming town of Mâcon with its colourful façades, and café and restaurant seating areas along the banks of the Saône.

You can visit the town by following the Tracé de la Plume (Quill Trail). A nod to French poet Alphonse de Lamartine, who is a native of the town! This trail is marked out with arrows on the ground, to see 28 sights across the town. The highlights:

  • the atypical Maison de Bois with saucy sculptures,
  • the Lamartine esplanade alongside the Saône,
  • the old Saint-Vincent,
  • the historic Saint-Laurent bridge, to serve as the backdrop for your selfies!

Venture inside the Musée des Ursulines. Discover the Maison de Bois devoted to Lamartine to learn about this local poet and politician who was known to fiercely defend his country!

The iconic Rock of Solutré

The majestic Rock of Solutré stands proudly at the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation vineyards.

After the easy climb to the top, there is a superb panoramic view over the vineyard and this rock's twin, the Rock of Vergisson.

The Musée de Préhistoire and botanical garden are also worth a visit.

Pouilly-Fuissé, the Mâconnais vintage

Enjoy a glass of Pouilly-Fuissé at the Maison du Grand Site just below the rock. Purchase a few bottles of this delicious wine at the Atrium in the village square.

The Val Lamartinien

Explore the roads and winemaking villages of Solutré, Vergisson, Fuissé, Milly-Lamartine… This landscape served as inspiration the poems by Lamartine. Venture inside the gates of Château de Pierreclos, Berzé-le-Châtel fortress, the Monks' Chapel in Berzé-la-Ville or head straight towards the magnificent Cluny Abbey.

Cycling along the Voie Bleue

Are you a fan of wide-open spaces? Then hire a bike and set off along the Voie Bleue route until you reach Tournus 30 km away. A rural getaway alongside the Saône! For the ultimate cycling experience, why not plan a weekend to ride the 145 km of the Grande Boucle de Bourgogne du Sud, the most well-known Greenway route!
