A village straight from the Middle Ages

Visiting the village

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and we understand why when we see it. The medieval town is perched up on the top of a little hill and is definitely worth the detour, thanks to the medieval walls, winding streets lined with beautiful houses, little church with Gothic-style interior, and much more.

Did you know?

The most expensive filming in Burgundy and a global success

In 2001, Flavigny was the location for the most expensive film probably ever filmed in Burgundy. The village was the set for the film Chocolat with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. 8 weeks of filming, 150 to 300 actors per day, technicians, extras, dozens of telephone lines, etc. And the result was a film nominated for five Oscars, and a global reputation for this little village of Burgundy.

An exceedingly good sweet

Anis de Flavigny

What's so unique about Flavigny-sur-Ozerain? The ancient abbey converted into a sweets factory. The Anis de Flavigny is a tiny little sugar-coated aniseed. The traditional recipe has been passed on for many years, to produce this little round, white sweet, with no colourings or preservatives.

Come and take a tour (free-of-charge) of the factory. All your senses will be awakened with the scent of aniseed in the air, the sound of the sweets in the copper bowls, the sight of millions of these little white sweets... And then it's time to taste them (and purchase some to take home) at the shop.

Road trip in the Auxois

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is not far from Alésia, which is right at the heart of the history of Gaul. Less than 10km from the village, come to the MuésoParc Alésia to learn about the famous battle between Vercingetorix and Julius Caesar.

This is also where the Seine takes its source in an unspoilt natural environment. It is also where naturalist, Buffon (author of a best-seller of his time "Histoire Naturelle") decided to get into the metalworking industry. The Grande Forge was built in the 18th century and is still standing today. It is a masterpiece of industrial heritage and we recommend you come and visit it.
