The Forêt d'Exception® label recognizes the exemplary nature of an approach led by dynamic players. It also distinguishes excellent management of a state-owned forest recognised for its unique heritage in terms of biodiversity, landscapes, history or valuable wood
The Val Suzon state forest has all the assets required for the Forêt d'Exception® label. It is located in the heart of the Val Suzon Regional Nature Reserve and at the gateway to the Dijon urban community. It covers an area of 2100 hectares. The Val Suzon is a unique and preserved area with a very diverse natural and cultural heritage. It is also a place of relaxation and breathing for the general public. The site is made up of a fine mosaic of natural environments, oscillating between plateau, limestone cliffs, valleys, dense forests and tufa marshes. This winding river with its clear waters flows down towards the Saône and the Mediterranean Sea
These diversified environments with their mountainous and Mediterranean atmospheres are the guarantee of an abundant biodiversity, a breeding ground for life, with nearly 70 species of a rare nature or at the limit of their geographical range. On this exceptional territory, man has left his mark until today. You can discover Neolithic sites, Gallo-Roman places of worship, the influence of medieval abbeys and the Val Suzon blast furnace
Listed as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF), it is one of the richest floristic sites in Burgundy, with mountain and Mediterranean species. Nicknamed "Little Burgundian Switzerland", the Val-Suzon forest is abundant in big game. The first regional nature reserve in Burgundy, this listed site where the Suzon river meanders is rich in varied landscapes: hillocks, rocky peaks, coombs... where man has made his home since prehistoric times. Twelve communes are working to protect the site. They have preserved an important rural heritage: wells, fountains, drinking troughs, and different types of washhouses. All of them can be found thanks to a common signposting.
