Along the "Route des Grands Crus" (Route of the Great Wines), this impressive and poetic, short and stocky monument set in the midst of the vines cannot be missed.
Welcome to the world of winemaking. Come and discover the history of the Burgundy vines and wine... in a magical and iconic place.
As you explore this lively place, you can expect some surprises while learning all about the Cistercian monks who built this prestigious château, and the Chevaliers du Tastevin (Knights of the Wine Taster's Cup) who are keeping the Burgundian bacchanalian traditions alive, in style!
From the wine cellar to the château
This place was originally built in the midst of the vines by the monks of Cîteaux, as a "wine cellar", and "wine estate", and then over the centuries, was transformed into a one-of-a-kind place, a château in its own right, and a symbol of the Burgundy vineyard today. This monument just happens to be right at the heart of the "climats" of Burgundy's vineyard, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.
NEW FOR 2020! A hologram, Dom Gobelet (rather aptly named ("Gobelet" means "cup" in French)), will accompany you on your tour of the château, to the wine press.
A lively château
The Château du Clos de Vougeot is a popular attraction in Burgundy where there is always something going on: tours, pop-up restaurants, sporting events, wine-themed and cultural events take place here all year long. Ask for the programme!
The Knights of the Wine Taster's Cup
Clos Vougeot is the seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (Fraternity of Knights of the Wine-Tasters' Cup)! For almost a century now, these valiant "knights" have been working hard to spread the name of Burgundy wines all over the world.
They often get together for a festive banquet - known as "chapitres" - in the château's wine cellars and new members are introduced at these prestigious evening events each year... just as Alfred Hitchcock was in 1960!
A stop on the "Route des Grands Crus"
The Château du Clos de Vougeot is one of the treasures to see along the "Route des Grands Crus" (Route of the Great Wines), the "Champs-Elysées of Burgundy".
Whether you decide to explore this route on foot, by bicycle, on a scooter or by car, come and discover Burgundy's most prestigious vintage wines!
