Remarkable civil building
Théâtre Romain
Built around 70 AD and located to the east of the ancient city, it was intended for dramatic performances. At 148 metres in diameter, it is the second largest in the Roman world, with a capacity for 20,000 spectators. Built on the natural slope of the land, the theatre is in the classical style with tiers of seats arranged in three semi-circular rows, cut by stairways. An imposing wall closed the theatre behind the stage, supposedly 30 metres high. Free visit.
