Site d'escalade - Roche de Vergisson
Vergisson is THE cliff for climbers in the Mâconnais. But it's not the only one. It's not uncommon to come across people from Lyon and much further afield, taking advantage of a trip to the Saône valley to discover this unusual cliff. This bar of ochre and white limestone rises vertically above the vineyards. Along with its little sister at Solutré, this rock formation, rare in the Mâconnais mountains, is a real eye-catcher, whether you're a climber, a tourist or a hiker. You can see it from very far away and you can see very far. In fine weather and without mist, if you turn east, you can see Mont Blanc rising above the Jura and the Pre-Alps. A magnificent sight. Climbing at Vergisson is not a recent phenomenon. The first open routes date back to the 1950s, and as was often the case in those days, they made use of the rock's obvious weaknesses, such as cracks, dihedrals and chimneys. In terms of climbing, the rock is not fabulous everywhere, but there are some very nice compact and sculpted areas. The rock is steep and high (up to 30m). The climbing is rarely continuous, but quite varied: walls, dihedrals, overhangs, roofs and even a shaft. There is a wide range of difficulties, from 4 to 8a, and beginners will find themselves rubbing shoulders with much more experienced climbers.
