Site d'escalade - La Roche Coche
The Roche Coche climbing site, which overlooks the pretty village of Berzé-la-Ville, is a small cliff that may prove interesting for local climbers looking for a change from the pleasures of Vergisson, Solutré or La Grisière. Climbing the Roche Coche also means you can enjoy uninterrupted views over the Val Larmartinien and the Cluny area (orientation table at the summit). There are around twenty short routes (from 6 to 12m) of varying quality (beware of certain areas of rock that lack cohesion and may fall apart despite recent purges). However, some of the routes have nothing to envy the better-known sites in the Mâconnais. These include: Engage la viande (7a+), Les malheurs de Sophie (6b), À deux c'est mieux (5c), Crucifixion (6a+), Les deux voleurs (6b), Les clous (7a+), Les joies du BTP (6b), Cliffengawel (5c).
Note: Berzé-la-Ville is home to an old gypsum mine (a mineral used to make plaster by firing) with a large network of galleries. Beware: exploring these galleries is dangerous and prohibited by prefectoral decree. Gypsum is soluble in water and several areas have already collapsed. However, you can visit the gypsum kiln and the start of the galleries, which are protected by stone vaults. If you are interested, please contact the association Les amis du vieux Berzé.
