Les ponts-levis de Dirol
The Canal Nivernais has a particularity that the other canals in the Burgundy region do not have, namely the presence of movable bridges.
In Dirol, there are two drawbridges in the commune.
In the downstream direction of the canal, the first is the Thoury drawbridge. This bridge is almost two centuries old and is made entirely of wood. Originally, the bridge was manually operated and balanced with a stone. Today, the bridge is mechanised and an electric box has been installed to allow easier handling for boaters.
The bridge was restored in 2012 after years of wear and tear.
In the same year, the Marais drawbridge, also automated, was rebuilt in the same metal, which is located about a hundred metres downstream.
Take advantage of a walk along the Nivernais canal to admire these two remarkable structures, you may be lucky enough to see them in operation if a boat arrives.
Take a break between the two bridges at the food truck Le Poteau, where you can eat an ice cream or quench your thirst.
