Would you like to spend a moment out of time, ladies and gentlemen? Visit the fortress of Berzé-le-Châtel with your family, the largest and best preserved in Burgundy. A rich programme of activities and guided tours immerses you in the fascinating world of the daily life of knights in the Middle Ages, and tells you the history of the fortress!
A family property, built by the ancestors of the current owners to protect the abbey of Cluny, Berzé overlooks a superb panorama of the vineyards of the Solutré valley. Built from the 11th to the 15th century around its Carolingian chapel, this castle has preserved its entire defensive system, thirteen towers including two keeps, its impressive entrance châtelet and its medieval rooms.
It is thus the most important and best preserved fortress in Burgundy.
The castle comprises three enclosures. Each of them shelters various gardens, orchards, vegetable gardens, French garden with its boxwoods, its statues, its hornbeams and its large yews cut in chessmen. From the top of its terraces, the view is splendid over the Lamartinien Valley with its vineyards in the background.
