A few hundred metres from the town lies the Bertranges forest which, with its 7600 hectares, is one of the largest wooded areas in France. One of the paths leads straight to the "Babaud oak" in the commune of Poiseux. This tree with its impressive trunk is now lying down.
On October 16, 1993, the Babaud oak was cut down, it was 482 years old: several times hit by lightning, frost and drought sounded the death knell of this giant of 6,90m in circumference. Its biggest branches were threatening to break. The stump is preserved and maintained.
Several time markers are placed on the rings of the tree, from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. Indeed, Babaud de la Chaussade did not plant this tree: the oak was already about forty years old when he arrived in the region.
