The Saint-Bénigne Fountain bears the name of a well-known saint in the region. This character from Izmir in Turkey is said to have evangelized the cities of Autun and Langres and converted many pagans in Dijon in the 2nd century AD. In order to escape the persecutions against the Christians, he would have taken refuge in Epagny and would have been arrested in 177 or 178 near the fountain which bears his name today. Martyred in Dijon, his tomb became a place of worship and pilgrimage. The cathedral of Saint-Bénigne now stands on his site in the city. Like his tomb, the fountain was once a place of devotion and the sick came to draw water from it.
Today the Saint-Bénigne fountain and its pond are a pleasant place for picnics
