Brancion: one of the jewels of southern Burgundy. Perched at an altitude of 400 metres, this medieval "Petite Cité de Caractère de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté" offers visitors a magnificent panorama of the Grosne Valley and a number of hiking trails. The site boasts a feudal castle first mentioned in 944, a 15th-century market hall and a Romanesque church, a masterpiece of late Romanesque with murals dating from the late 13th century. The view of this picturesque village from the castle keep is well worth the diversions.
Did you know? The recumbent statue of Josserand III, lord of the manor, died in the Crusades at the Battle of Manzourah while fighting alongside Saint-Louis. His ruined son sold the fortress to the Duke of Burgundy Hugues IV 8 years later (1259). After the death of Charles the Bold in 1477, Brancion returned to the royal domain. The Château fell for the first time in its history in 1594 during the Wars of Religion. It was sold as national property in 1793.
