Heir to a long metallurgical tradition, the town of Guérigny was very important in the 18th century thanks to the activity of the Forges de la Chaussade, one of the first factories in France. In 2006, numerous events took place to celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of Babaud de La Chaussade. The buildings of the industrial site of the Royal Forges of Guérigny have undergone major work. They now house a museum where the history of Nivernais metallurgy, models, old machines, hammer drills, steam engines, production for the navy (anchors, chains...) are presented
