From the 18th century onwards, La Clayette became an important leather centre. The production of the tanneries was of excellent quality and consequent with 9 tanneries and about fifty workers. Leather work became a major activity in La Clayette, which was described as the "city of leather". The last tannery closed in 1951, due to competition. The remaining pond is the last testimony of this activity.
