This rampart was built in 1194 by Pierre de Courtenay to protect the convents and parishes that had developed outside the town. During the Hundred Years' War, it was reinforced by the construction of fortified gates and towers. During the 16th century, the rampart lost its usefulness, was no longer maintained and was used as a stone quarry.
We owe the preservation of the section between the Porte du Croux and the Loire to urban development and the presence of a wetland area that was difficult to build on. At the end of 1960, the town bought the land to create what is now the Promenade des Remparts.
