Born in the Vosges, in Vioménil, at an altitude of 404 m, the Saône is only a large stream with a very winding course, and as it flows it becomes more and more substantial until it reaches the Côte d'Or and crosses St-Jean-de-Losne. It has already lost more than 210 metres in altitude when it passes through Burgundy and only a few metres of slope remain before it reaches La Mulatière in Lyon where, after 482 kilometres, it joins the Rhône.
