The village of Saint-Désert was, from the 13th century, a possession of the bishopric of Chalon-sur-Saône. A century later, the chapter of the cathedral of Saint-Vincent de Chalon was the only lord. This absence of a lay owner until the 16th century probably explains the absence of a castle and the defensive nature of the church (the base of the towers and the bretèche are original, the crenellated crown is an addition by the restorer), which was once situated on the line of the ramparts.
The reconstruction of the choir, the transept and the chapels was carried out between 1862 and 1885, with a bell tower dominating the façade.
