The chapel of the Citadel was opened under the name of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
Tradition has it that in ancient times, there was a hermit on this spot, then a church with regular canons. Around 570, it would have been transformed into an Abbey of Saint Benedict by Saint Flavien, bishop of Chalon, successor of Saint Agricol and predecessor of Saint Loup. It was the Abbey of Saint Peter through which the bishops appointed to Chalon entered the city. The monks emigrated near the Saône in 1570 and their Abbey was replaced by the Citadel. The present Saint-Pierre church, which was their new chapel, was completed in 1713.
