A History, a Profession, a Passion
Initially strong companions of men for working the land and transporting timber, the beautiful white Charolais cattle, originally from the Arconce valley in Saône-et-Loire, have adapted to the poor soils of our region.
The Musée de l'Elevage et du Charolais tells the story of the incredible expansion of the famous Charolais cow, from 1800 to the present day.
It's also the story of the development of the fascinating profession of breeder-cattleman, who has succeeded in raising the Charolais breed to an exceptional standard.
Taking advantage of an ungrateful land, these enthusiasts have made the granite massif of the Morvan the cradle of the Charolais, a land of breeding, leaving the fattening of their cattle to the richer lands of the Bazois, Auxois or Autunois, all the way to the plains of the Po in Italy.
From local fairs and livestock markets, these cattle have now conquered the world market, from Canada to Brazil, from Norway to China.
This is the story of ancestral know-how and the secrets of a trade that must continually adapt to the challenges of the modern world, without compromising on quality.
So come on in, walk through the museum doors, and discover all this, and more: the love of the earth and those who live off it.
