France's No. 1 auctioneer's market in terms of the number of animals presented in 2010. Eco Mayor prize in 2009.
Saint-Christophe-en-Brionnais, in the heart of the Brionnais bocage, is particularly lively on Wednesdays, the day of its Charolais cattle market. All year round, come and discover this unusual "show" in an exceptional setting, which harmoniously combines the past, the present and the future!
This historic market has long enjoyed a reputation that extends far beyond the borders of the Saône-et-Loire region. This is all the more true with the completion in mid-2009 of its clock market: an example of the integration of new energies with almost a hectare of solar roofing and rainwater recovery tanks.
Transactions at the auction market (young cattle, grazers, "lean" animals) start at 7am (ending at variable times from one Wednesday to the next, depending on the number of cattle) and resume at 12.45pm until mid-afternoon (depending on the number of cattle).
For the traditional over-the-counter market (fat cattle), transactions start at 12.15pm and finish at 12.45pm.
Guided tours to "Experience and understand our market" from 8.30am to 3pm (other times and days on request). To get the most out of this experience, it is best to visit between 8.30am and 10am or around 1pm to guarantee the presence of animals.
Duration: approximately 1 hour.
Booking recommended, especially for groups.
Tourist information is available at the Tourist Information Centre. Depending on your appetite, the restaurant owners offer a market menu with a choice of pot-au-feu, calf's head, entrecôte or beef steak.
