Montchanin, founded in 1854 in the heart of a coal basin that was mainly exploited in the 19th century, is located at a communications hub. The Canal du Centre and the railway contributed to the town's development, prompting the Schneider family to set up a steelworks here. At the same time, clay made the town the capital of the tile and ceramics industry.
Don't miss the impressive Henri-Paul foundry, near the Canal du Centre.
