This museum is housed in the castle of the
Comte de Provence, the brother of Louis
XVI, which went on to replace the feudal
fortress of the Dukes of Bourgogne in the
18th century. The collections consist of a
dozen very important Parisian donations
and 300 works from national museums
and offer the visitor an almost entirely
comprehensive look at Western art, from
the primitives to the contemporaries. The
collection of paintings and sculptures is
particularly strong in the following areas:
the European Middle Ages; 16th and 18th
century Italian art; 17th century Dutch
and Flemish art and French art from the
Renaissance to the present day, a section
grouped around a unique collection of 30
pastels and sketches by P.P. Prudhon.
