The Canal de Navigation Latéral à la Loire was designed by Emiland-Marie Gauthey and took 16 years to build, twice as long as originally planned.
Traffic on the lateral canal increased throughout the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Over the last few decades, commercial traffic has been replaced by river tourism.
On the calm waters of the canal, you'll be treated to some spectacular sights, such as the Guétin canal bridge, which will take you up high and give you a panoramic view of the landscapes around you!
The canal has 37 locks on the main line and 13 locks on the branches, and passes through some magnificent towns such as La-Charité-sur-Loire and Nevers.
