The Canal du Centre was created between 1783 and 1793 at the behest of the States of Burgundy and the project of its chief engineer, Émiland Gauthey.
This 112 km canal provides a lively route between the Saône and Loire rivers. Since it was built at the end of the 18th century, it has contributed to the economic development of the Montceau-les-Mines coalfield.
You'll discover a multitude of landscapes and sites along the peaceful Canal.
You'll pass through the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune, and the lush green meadows of the Charolais region.
On the cultural front, don't miss the Château de Digoine in Palinges or Paray-le-Monial and its Basilica, famous for its Romanesque art and its importance as a place of pilgrimage.
Or head for the grandiose canal bridge at Digoin, which crosses the Loire at an impressive 234 metres.
You can also follow the Canal du Centre cycle route, as both the Tour de Bourgogne à Vélo and EuroVelo 6 use greenways and towpaths.
