Day 1: Tonnerre - Ancy-le-Franc (64 km - grad. 2/4 - 4h)
Meet in the morning at the Tonnerre Tourist Office. Welcome, bike check and adjustment.
This first stage is all about castles, and along the way you'll have the chance to discover three superb Renaissance castles.
The first, just a few turns of the wheel from the canal, is the Château de Tanlay. Then you leave the canal and, after a few bumps in the road, you'll be charmed by the mysteries of the Château de Maulnes, one of only two pentagonal-shaped castles in Europe. End the stage in Ancy-le-Franc with one of the treasures of the Italian Renaissance: the Château d'Ancy-le-Franc.
Dinner and overnight in Ancy-le-Franc, in a former foundry converted into a bed and breakfast.
Day 2: Ancy-le-Franc - Montbard (47 km - grad. 1/4 - 3 hrs)
During this day, you will discover Buffon's Grande Forge, and in the heart of the small villages along the Burgundy canal, pretty mills, wash-houses, churches and the Château de Nuits.
In the afternoon, visit the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
A beautiful, soothing place to end the day.
Dinner and overnight in Montbard, in a traditional hotel.
Day 3: Montbard - Semur-en-Auxois (58 km - grad. 2/4 - 4 hrs)
Another beautiful and rich stage: you will be enchanted by the medieval village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France), built around a Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century, whose monastic buildings are now partly used by the factory that makes the famous "Anis de Flavigny". Not forgetting the Gallo-Roman site and museopark of Alesia, as well as the splendid château of Bussy-Rabutin.
You will then enjoy the bucolic valley of Marigny with its scale of locks (37 locks in 12 km), before leaving the canal to reach the medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois and all its small heritage reminders of its rich history.
Dinner in a restaurant and overnight in Semur-en-Auxois in a charming house in the medieval centre.
Day 4: Semur-en-Auxois - Châteauneuf-en-Auxois (58 km - grad. 2/4 - 4 hrs)
On this day, you will discover the Auxois and its hedged farmland. You'll pass the highest point on the Burgundy canal, where the canal's various reservoirs are concentrated: the Lac de Pont, the Lac de Panthier, the Chazilly reservoir... as well as the Voûtes de Pouilly-en-Auxois (the canal is underground).
The region's heritage is also well represented, with the Château de Marigny-le-Cahouët (a 12th-century fortified castle), the Collegiate Church of St Thibault, the Château d'Eguilly and the Château de Commarin, before finishing with the Château de Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, which overlooks the plain and the Burgundy Canal from the top of its hill.
Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Châteauneuf-en-Auxois (listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France).
Day 5: Châteauneuf-en-Auxois - Dijon (48 km - grad. 2/4 - 4 hrs)
On this final day, you'll discover the wildest part of the Burgundy canal: the Ouche valley. A beautiful, narrow and tortuous cut in the Burgundian limestone. Perpendicular valleys hide a number of jewels: the château and gardens of Barbirey, the abbey of La Bussière...
Then it's back to civilisation and the arrival in Dijon via Lac Kir. Welcome to the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy and gastronomy.
Overnight stay with breakfast in Dijon
If you haven't planned to stroll around Dijon, return by train to Tonnerre
(6 trains between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. for a journey of around 1 hour).
If you've never been before, we recommend extending your stay to discover the charms of Dijon, "the city of 100 bell towers".
You'll discover the city's history through its built heritage: the Palais des Etats, the Chartreuse de Champmol, the Tour Philippe Le Bon... but also through its culinary delights, including the famous Dijon mustard, blackcurrant cream and gingerbread.
History and gastronomy are around every corner in the city.
