In the first century B.C., Mont-Auxois was the site of Alisiia, the capital of the Mandubii. After Vercingetorix was defeated here in 52 B.C. by Julius Caesar, the Gallo-Roman town became famous for bronze working.
Saint Regina was born in Alesia and gave her name (Sainte Reine) to the modern commune.
Canon Félix Kir, a resistance fighter and politician, was born in Alise and is buried in the graveyard.
