Georges Feydeau's play in three acts, first performed in 1896 at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris.
Lucienne Vatelin, the wife of a Parisian notary, has been pursued for 8 days by Pontagnac. But that's without counting on Rédillon, Lucienne's platonic lover! Lucienne is an honest woman who would never cheat on her husband... unless she knew he was cheating on her!
Unfortunately for Vatelin, he sees an exuberant and embarrassing English lover arrive that very day... He has to get her away... so he meets her at the Ultimus hotel on the advice of Pontagnac, who hastens to tell Lucienne so that she can see her husband in flagrante delicto of adultery and so that he can be the object of Lucienne's vengeance, which he covets so much!
Complicated you think? Well, add to that an invalid wife who isn't invalid, a gravelly military doctor and his tone-deaf wife, an Englishman from Marseille, maids each more eccentric than the last, a cocotte, police superintendents, a pedantic hotel manager, a pimply bellboy, and guests annoyed by the doorbells, and you've got enough to make for a completely madcap vaudeville!
But who will be the fall guy in this farce?
