Antoine de Vinck (1924-1992): the centenary
The centenary of Antoine de Vinck's birth is an opportunity to look back at the protean work of one of the masters of the post-war revival of ceramic art.
Born in Belgium and educated at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et d'Arts Décoratifs de La Cambre, he perfected his technique at Château de Ratilly and La Borne in the early 1950s. A Poyaudin by adoption, stoneware was his favourite material. The two wood-fired kilns he built (the first in his studio in Kraainem - near Brussels - in 1954 and the second in Treigny in 1984) produced an immense, multi-faceted, paradoxical body of work, combining utilitarian or decorative pottery with sculpture, abundance with simplicity.
The aim of this tribute exhibition is to highlight the different aspects of his work, the dominant role of drawings and sketches, and the influence of nature and spirituality as much as design.
