For the past 20 years, an extraordinary adventure has been underway right at the heart of La Puisaye, close to Paris: a medieval castle is being built using 13th-century techniques. A fantastic medieval worksite where around fifty builders are working hard to take you on a journey into the past. Incredible, isn't it?
Stone after stone, you can see the castle coming together right before your eyes. It is an attraction that is constantly evolving so make sure you come back again and again, and learn something new each time about history, architecture, calculation, geometry, etc.
A real-life medieval worksite
In Guédelon in La Puisaye (Yonne), you'll feel like you've arrived in the Middle Ages... But in fact the castle is actually quite recent!
This unbelievable project began in 1997. The plan was to build a medieval castle, using the building techniques of the 13th century. The goal was to try out these techniques and gain a better understanding of them.
Since then, stonemasons, builders, woodcutters and blacksmiths have been working together. All of this, under the watchful eyes of the 300,000 visitors who come here each year! This huge project should be finished by 2025.
