Natural display of light

Come and see the lights…

This natural display of light has occurred every year for the past 8 centuries, and is an absolute must-see. Between the 20th and 30th June at around midday, 9 spots of light appear on the ground and seem to outline a trail leading from one side of the nave to the other. A magical experience whether you are a believer or not!

There is a mysterious connection between these lights and Vézelay Abbey, and there are other intriguing and moving displays of light there throughout the year, on the winter solstice and at Easter, for example.

Beyond the basilica: the village of Vézelay

Vézelay's prosperity went on for several centuries, as thousands of pilgrims, princes, kings, and emperors came to worship the relics of Sainte Madeleine, before setting off along the Way of St. James or on various crusades.

A place with a rich and eventful history that must be honoured and protected: Vézelay Church and Hill have been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1979!
