Founded in 1128 by Abbot Stephen of Toucy, under the authority of St. Bernard, the Abbey of Reigny was placed under the protection of Pope Eugene III in 1147. It was very powerful and prosperous in the Middle Ages and welcomed up to 300 monks and lay people. On the banks of the Cure, an ancient monastic park whose particularity lies in its very sophisticated hydraulic system: a system of dykes and canals was built to allow irrigation. Private park.
In 1493, Charles VIII made it a Royal Foundation. The Hundred Years' War, the Huguenots and the French Revolution took their toll on the beautiful building, which nevertheless retains some very interesting vestiges of its prestigious past: the exceptional 14th century Cistercian refectory (only three examples remain in France). (there are only three examples left in France) with its elegant double-bayed nave which has preserved its original polychromy, the hall and the monks' dormitory, refurbished in the 17th century.
From the demolished buildings, the foundations of the abbey church can still be seen. Finally, the entire Cistercian hydraulic system has been preserved and the cloister basin has just been restored.
