The city where Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, was born, stands on a hill dominated by the vast park created in the 18th century by this native of the region. Surrounded by the remains of the former 14th century castle of the Dukes of Burgundy, now classified as a "Historic Monument" and a "Refuge" by the French League for the Protection of Birds, the Buffon Park is part of the City's commitment to respect the environment. The Buffon Museum & Park, which has been awarded the "Musée de France" and "Maison des Illustres" labels, is dedicated to this famous naturalist who was Intendant of the King's Garden for fifty years, as well as to his closest collaborator Daubenton.
