This water tower, built in 1918, was intended to supply water to the American military hospital, which covered the entire surface area of the current circuit. The end of the Second World War meant that the water tower was never put into service. In 2015, it was listed as a historic monument.
At the end of 2016, the Conseil Départemental acquired the water tower and its grounds. On 25 June 2017, the "Memorial to the American presence in Nièvre 1917/1918" was inaugurated as part of the centenary of the Great War. To mark the occasion, the American stele in the local cemetery was moved to the foot of the water tower to form an integral part of the Memorial.
Two routes of 6 km and 12 km, along 26 observation posts with texts and archive photos, take us back to the First World War: 330 hectares, 800 barracks, planned for 40,000 beds, all built in six months. At the entrance to the American Memorial at the foot of the Château d'Eau, the only vestige of this era still intact in the Nièvre region, an information panel explains the existence of this camp.
