The Cluny countryside is dotted with small groups of buildings - often with a chapel or a church which may have been a parish church at its heart - called "doyennés". At the same time, they were agricultural centres, places of welcome, conflict resolution or holiday resorts, and structured the territory around the abbey and supplied it. Bézornay is a very telling example of this strategic function. The position it occupies in the landscape and the quality of the conservation of the estate show how much Cluny owes to the resources of its environment!
