In the 15th century, a certain Botier fell and died on the site of the present chapel. His relatives, notables of La Clayette, erected a cross in his memory and later a chapel.
Over time, the chapel acquired greater and greater importance, and went beyond its status as a simple memorial chapel.
On 19 January 1794, the chapel was closed down by order of the Revolutionary Supervisory Council, because it was being used as a retreat for fanatics. After the Revolution, the De Noblet family decided to buy back the chapel in order to return it to worship. The Marquis Louis-Marie-Abel De Noblet carried out extensive work to restore the building to its former glory, and in gratitude for the graces granted by the Lord to his family during the First World War.
Despite the work and the enthusiasm of the population for their new chapel, the enthusiasm was short-lived and the maintenance of the building was abandoned. In 2015, the De Noblet family decided to sell the chapel to the municipality of Varennes-sous-Dun for one symbolic euro.
Following this purchase, the association of the Friends of the Croix-Bouthier Chapel (ACCB) was created to revive the building. Since then, numerous works and renovations have been carried out.
