Place du Marronnier de Saulx-le-Duc
The Place du Marronnier is located halfway up the hill. It owes its name to the superb chestnut tree that shades it. Note the presence of two lime trees, a calvary, a statue of the black virgin and a walled garden. The statue of the black virgin marks the site of the old church, which was built in 1197 and demolished in 1844. This cast iron statue was made by the Daurenne company. Thanks to his close collaboration with renowned artists such as Auguste Bartholdi and Emmanuel Frémiet, he quickly became an important figure in French cast iron art.
