The Laundress Ecomuseum opened its doors on 26 June 2022.
The association Au fil des lavoirs, in addition to its objective of promoting the town of Clamecy's communal and private washhouses, wanted to create this eco-museum to bear witness to the work of these women, washerwomen, laundresses, laundresses, whatever you want to call them.
It retraces the various stages in the washing of clothes, using mannequins and the tools needed for the job.
The world of the washerwoman is brought to life.
The aim is also to awaken the memories of people who knew or heard about the washhouses, and to arouse the interest of younger people in this bygone era.
Our motivation is heritage and remembrance.
You can buy items on site to support the association.
For people who have heard or known about the work of the washerwomen, the association Au fil des lavoirs invites you to give evidence in order to collect as many testimonies as possible on a vigil will be organised at the end of September. More details to follow.
