The Solutré and Vergisson rocks and the Mont de Pouilly slope eastwards, as a result of the tilting of the limestone plateau during the Alpine uplift. Originally covered by forests, their summits are now covered by a specific environment known as calcicole grasslands, vast expanses of short grasslands covering poor, shallow soil. These areas are home to a high level of biological diversity, characterised by the presence of rare species and remarkable plant associations, and recognised at European level by their inclusion in the Natura 2000 network.
