From the lakes of Champagne to the heart of Burgundy, this is the promise of the Canal route between Champagne and Burgundy. The old towpath is ideal for cycling and family outings. The entire 280km route reveals many of the charms of our region: lush green landscapes, authentic villages with a rich and varied heritage, and châteaux nestling in their green setting. You may even catch a glimpse of the unique drawbridge at Cheuge!
The history of this towpath dates back to the creation of the canal. Boats were towed along the canal. The boats were connected to a "haleur", which travelled along the towpath, by a hemp rope extended by a chain. The person pulling the boat along the towpath could be human, equine or mechanical.
