GR® 654 "Via Vézelay

The 14th and 15th centuries were the heyday of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Then came the Wars of Religion, the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution, a period during which the pilgrimage to Compostela was much less of a concern. The supposed tomb of Santiago fell into oblivion. It was revived in 1938.
To go to Compostela, you can start at your doorstep! This was the case in the Middle Ages, and it's still true today for most pilgrims.

The GR® 654 or "Via Vézelay" path links emblematic sites such as the "eternal hill" of Vézelay, the abbey and cathedral of Auxerre, the vineyards of Chablis, as well as the abbeys of La Charité-sur-Loire and Nevers, the Collegiate Church of Saint Léger in Tannay with its Gothic heart, and many others.

A few tips:
- Travel as light as possible
- Walk with sticks
- Take a reflective yellow jacket
- If you wish to walk the route as a pilgrim, take a pilgrim's passport.
- Book your accommodation in advance
- Drink regularly
