The Monks' Way
Day 1: Chalon-sur-Saône
Welcome to Chalon-sur-Saône, a city of Art, History and... a gentle way of life! An ideal geographical location and harmonious urban planning projects make this a privileged city, with a wealth of heritage, gastronomy and festivals that delight the people of Chalon and the Greater Chalon area!
Nicéphore Niepce, inventor of photography, was born and lived in Chalon-sur-Saône. He left a strong imprint on the town, and today an eponymous museum is devoted entirely to this art of the image. More than two million photographs are on display, a very prestigious collection that is regularly exported around the world.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Chalon-sur-Saône - Sennecey-le-Grand - Laives - 22 km
An important centre of life for several centuries, Sennecey-le-Grand has preserved many testimonies of the past: the Romanesque church of Saint Julien (12th century), the facades of 18th century houses, numerous washhouses and fountains, calvaries, the esplanade and moat of the old castle (16th century).
In the hamlets, Saint-Médard and Notre Dame des Neiges chapels, castle and arboretum park in Ruffey.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Laives - Blanot - 25 km
A first stage that allows you to discover the Tournugeois mountains, located in the extreme north of the Mâconnais. The first few kilometres are uphill, allowing you to stay on a ridge path that leads to the panoramic site of the Roche d'Aujoux and the medieval site of Brancion, which is well worth a break, both for the visit of the castle, the typical village and its church, and for the panorama it offers over the Grosne valley.
360° panorama of Mont-Saint-Romain. Descent to the village of Blanot.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Blanot - Cluny - 14 km
A transitional stage, to allow you to enjoy Cluny, which you reach by a long descent.
Day 5: Cluny - Mâcon (bus Cluny - Mâcon or 27 km on foot)
A transitional stage, to allow you to enjoy Cluny, which you reach by a long descent. You will then take the time to discover this town and its famous Benedictine abbey, which extended its influence throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. In addition to its prestigious historical and cultural heritage, the town is also a major centre of technological innovation: virtual animations will take you back to the past during visits to the Abbey and the Cheese Tower, equipped with augmented reality screens.
Bus line 7 buscephale to reach Mâcon (not included).
Night at the hotel.
Day 6 : Mâcon
End of our services after breakfast.
This path is said to have taken its name from the links between the abbeys of Citeaux and Cluny in the 12th century.
Very well known locally, it links the Church of Saint-Martin-de-Laives, near Sennecey-le-Grand, to Cenves, in the Rhône, on foot, passing through Cluny where it joins the Way of St James.
