Day 1 Decize
Arrival in Decize.
Day 2 Decize - Châtillon-en-Bazois 48 km
This beautiful first day allows you to discover the Canal du Nivernais which links the Loire to the Yonne. You arrive in Chatillon-en-Bazois where you stay in a charming guest house.
Day 3 Chatillon-en-Bazois - Clamecy 63 km
On the towpath, you cross different landscapes along the Canal du Nivernais and arrive in Clamecy, a picturesque little town with beautiful half-timbered houses.
Day 4 Clamecy - Auxerre 64 km
You take the road along the banks of the Canal du Nivernais and follow the route of the "Bois de Flottage": in the Middle Ages, the Morvan forest produced wood for the inhabitants of Paris. This was transported to the capital by floating. You will enjoy this charming, multi-faceted itinerary, passing by the Rochers du Saussois, a major climbing spot, and Mailly-le-Château. At the Pisciculture De Crisenon you can learn about trout farming and buy local products. You will discover charming little villages such as Cravant, a medieval village. Don't miss a diversion to the Caves de Bailly for a visit to the centre of the earth and a tasting of Crémant de Bourgogne before getting back on the bikes to Auxerre. Enjoy this magnificent city with its rich historical quarter classified as a "protected site". Auxerre, a town of Art and History, has preserved an exceptional architectural heritage
the cathedral of St Etienne, a model of Gothic elegance, and the Abbey of St Germain.
Day 5 Auxerre - Joigny 35 km
You leave Auxerre on the new greenway that runs along the canal and the Yonne. As you pass near Chemilly sur Yonne, you have the opportunity to stop at Le Borvo, a unique smoked salmon production site where you can buy local products. You arrive in Joigny, a very beautiful town of art and history.
Day 6 Departure
Departure after breakfast.
Cycling along the Canal du Nivernais is pure happiness: you ride along the towpaths or the small parallel roads. A delightful region to discover with its vineyards, the meandering rivers, the richness of its ancestral artistic and historical heritage, its landscapes to read like a book, its culinary art to tickle your taste buds... Everything is brought together for a memorable cycling trip!
