Gray's first library came into being during the revolutionary period, following the rescue of numerous books and manuscripts by the people of Gray from the libraries of the town's teaching congregations, neighbouring abbeys and the homes of emigrants. Open to the public, it was housed in the former Cordeliers convent.
It was in 1859 that the current library was built next to the Town Hall. Designed as a ceremonial building, it was connected to the mayor's office. It opened its doors on 1 January 1860.
