Arnolphe has taken in Agnes, a poor child, since the age of four and is raising her in his own way.
He is her legal guardian.
Now that she is a young girl, he is thinking of marrying her in the very near future.

During one of his journeys, young Horace was enlightened by the purity and grace of Agnes.
