Built from 1895 onwards on the site vacated by the railway lines, the Boulevard de la République linked the old town with the Saint-Cosme district, an industrial and working-class area located along the canal and incorporated into the commune of Chalon in 1854.
This was an opportunity for the bourgeoisie, enriched by industry, to build luxurious, modern buildings, symbols of social advancement.
