As part of the European Heritage Days, the SOCALCOR quarry at Epagny - Savigny-le-Sec will be opening its doors to visitors on Saturday 21 September from 10am to 4pm to give them an insight into the aggregates industry.
With an annual national production of over 300 million tonnes, aggregates are one of the most widely used raw materials in France. Quarries are located as close as possible to consumer areas, and play an active role in regional development by supplying aggregates directly to construction sites such as roadworks (road infrastructure, railways, etc.) and ready-mix concrete plants. Aggregates are also used in the creation of networks (sewerage, fibre, etc.). Their use is therefore the basis of our road, architectural and building heritage.
In operation since 1974, the Epagny - Savigny-le-Sec site supplies standardised materials for the local market, both for public works and for higher-quality uses such as concrete and asphalt mixes. Some 650,000 tonnes of aggregates are currently produced annually from the limestone formations in the area.
Against this backdrop, the industry has long been committed to sustainable development through the "UNICEM Entreprises Engagées" association. UNICEM pilots the Cap Environnement initiative, which certifies sites committed to environmental progress, as well as the "Carrières et Matériaux" CSR label.
On the site, environmental issues are an integral part of the business. Numerous measures have been implemented to ensure that the site blends seamlessly into its local environment. For example, in partnership with the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels de Bourgogne (CEN), ecological management of the dry grasslands has been in place for over 20 years, enabling the enhancement of very specific habitats.
This day provides an opportunity to discover this little-known industry and industrial heritage.
On the programme:
Guided tour of the quarry site (lasting around 1 hour, with regular departures throughout the day);
Discovery of the different stages in the production and use of aggregates;
Discovery of the site's geology and environment;
Theme-based exhibitions;
Don't forget to bring comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
